Who started Pier tag?  Why does nobody play anymore?  I believe that Carl Nadlehoffer deserves a lifetime achievement award for Pier tag.  He eluded more people for more years than anybody else.  Where did he learn his tricks?  Any photos of Carl on Pier tag?  Who else were some of the outstanding players over time?  I know Chris Perry was very hard to catch and as a wrestler how did he learn to swim so fast?

Chris Perry also placed in an international competition sponsored by range rover (I think).  It combined physical and mental and driving challenges to determine the winer.  I believe it was called the G4 competition.  Chris did your days of Lifeguard competitions help you prepare for that event?  Did it ever air on OLN or anything?  Got a web link to event info?

What years did the Mudrats Win City?  WHo were the coaches who brought home the bragging rights?

Anybody still maintan the Mudrat Record boards? Got a spreadsheet of photo of the board?

Jim, thank you for setting up this blog! I can give some information on the Mudrats winning City. I believe they won in 1974, with Chuck Koch and Bill Boe as coaches. They also won in 1980, with Scott Lampert, Janice Boe, Ron Boe and Sarah Nadelhoffer as coaches. The Mudrats probably won City in 1976, or 1978, but I cannot remember!

I wonder if Bob White still has the movie he made of us playing pier tag, with the player interviews.

Do you think OLN would be interested in doing a special on pier tag?

Hey Bob...Yes, Dad (Bob White Sr. aka, "Large Quail") does have the videos. We watched them a couple of years ago at Chuck Kochs home. What a riot they are to watch! Kager, Lampert, Babchek, Milburn, Big N... just to name a few of the characters!

Does anyone know when the Beach team became known as the "Mudrats"? As I recall it was quite unofficial when I worked at the Beach. I think it's possible that Scott Nocco came up with this endearing name when he was coach of the team in Late 60's/early '70's. I don't know this for a fact since the first time I even saw the beach was in 1970.

As I recall, Scott would tease the kids calling them his "little Mudrats". I don't know if it became official in 1972 or 1973 but I think it was one of those years.

Wow, never knew this space existed! I am going to be in Naperville for the Beach Reunion, and of course will be looking forward to a game of pier tag (although my lungs aren't prepared)! I competed in the 2003 Land Rover G4 Challenge and supported the 2006 race that traveled to Thailand, Laos, Brazil and Bolivia. (www.landroverG4challenge.com) It's an honor to be mentioned in the same article as pier tag and Carl Nadelhofer. I played pier tag with him a handful of times, and enjoyed it every time!

Wow, I can't believe it's been a yr. since the reunion! How is everyone out there?

I grew up with Chris. He was always very good games that challenged the mind and body. He was an all around athlete but more than anything a very competitive person. He and his father influenced me and a great deal of others to get involved with wrestling, join the beach staff and Chris definitely influenced how we played pier tag.

Before Chris began playing, more of the game was played in the water. Chris and the other wrestlers took the game on land, mostly because no one could catch Chris out of the water. In the late 80’s we played a lot more of the game was played on land and in the water.

Anyway, the more people played on land, the more slips, falls and serious injuries we had. So you know how those things go.

20 yrs later, at The Reunion Chris and I played a little and I was sad to say that my body and lungs were not what they used to be. But if anyone wants to take up another game, just let me know, I’m down. davidsullivan03@yahoo.com And I’m in town.
